About Kimberly Thorner

I am a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT) in Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and California.  I received my Masters in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University and subsequently worked with teens, adults, and families throughout Silicon Valley.  I have experience in both community health as well as private practice and enjoy working with clients from all backgrounds.   I am also a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Provider (PMH-C) and have specialized training in maternal mental health issues.  I am also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional (CCATP).

As a marriage and family therapist, I am trained in psychotherapy and family systems.  I help clients explore their current symptoms and challenges through the lens of relationships (family, romantic, work, and friendships) and their “problems” within those contexts.  My previous academic experiences and working in Washington allow me to provide meaningful support to professionals and students in higher education.  I see myself as a strong ally and feel greatly privileged to witness my client's growth in meeting their goals.

Originally from the east coast, I returned to establish my private practice in the DC area where I began my previous career in education research and policy. I also hold a Masters degree in Education Policy from The George Washington University.

My Approach

Therapy works best when there is a strong alliance between the therapist and client.  I approach my sessions with an open mind, empathy, and compassion in order to build a positive working relationship. My goal is to provide a safe and supportive space for you to uncover old patterns and learn new skills to cope and grow.

My practice draws predominantly from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), though I tailor my approach to meet individual client needs incorporating solution-focused, Acceptance Based Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, as well as narrative therapy.  I collaborate with clients to set goals for treatment and use evidence-based practices to help them attain their desired outcomes.  Together we uncover unhelpful and unproductive patterns, work to challenge old unhelpful or negative thoughts, and develop behaviors more aligned with your goals and values.

My goal is to help my clients develop new skills, awareness, and confidence to manage their everyday lives. I want my clients to see their own growth, which is why we set measurable goals and monitor individual progress.  I have found clients make the most progress by intentionally working between sessions by practicing new skills or completing brief homework exercises.
